Six Positions Open for 2018
Tolani Lake Enterprises is now accepting applications from experienced growers who are
passionate about growing good food and teaching others how to grow. This program blends Diné
cultural knowledge delivered by elders with best organic growing practices shared in a culturally
grounded, hands on learning environment. All are welcome to apply.
Participants will complete the Culturally Based Farm Planning Course (January 10-12) and
Methods of Instruction Workshop (January 16-17) and spend one day/week for 16 consecutive
weeks (January 9 – April 24) learning from Master Grower, Kim Howell-Costion at Ashokala
Gardens in Snowflake, Arizona.
Each participant will build a teaching portfolio and teach 16 half-day workshops in the Tolani
Lake area to share what they learned with growers enrolled in the Small Market Farm Training
Series held on Wednesdays from January 10 – May 31.
Participants will receive $90 per learning day ($1,890), travel support for carpooling to
Snowflake, and $100 for teaching each half-day workshop ($1,600).
Topics include: small farm planning basics; effective teaching skills; techniques for growing in the
off season including greenhouse, hoop house and season extender design and operation; growing,
transplanting and hardening off seedlings; growing your own starts; designing and implementing
a balanced growing environment; creating an annual growing plan; how to grow cool and warm
weather crops; organic pest and disease control; & strategies for climate and wildlife challenges.
